How many lineal feet in a board foot




















Linear measure is a measurement of the total length in feet of a board; the linear measurement is not dependent on the thickness or width. The BFpLF factor computed by this equation is calculated by multiplying the thickness T by the width W and dividing by the standard cross section of a nominal board foot.

The resulting factor is unit-less as it is the ratio of the cross sectional area of the measured board to the cross sectional area of a standard board foot. The factor of board feet per lineal foot allows for calculating board footage for odd sized lumber. Leading zeros do not effect calculations. Each boardfoot measure must have a width in inches and a depth also in inches associated with it.

For instance, a 2 x 4 is by definition only 2 inches in depth and 4 inches in width. Those are the defaults for each since 2 x 4s are the most common lumber. It can be any length in boardfeet. A 2 x 4 with a measure of 5. A 2x4x1 has 0. A 1x12x10 board has 10 total board feet in it: the board foot factor BFF of a 1X12 is 1.

Multiply 1 by the length of 10, which gives total board feet of Multiply 0. Tip: Both of these previous boards measure 10 Linear Feet LF because, remember, LF does not take thickness and width into consideration. A 2x4x10 board has 6. A 2x4x14 board has 9.
