Mayweather vs ortiz when is the fight
Victor Ortiz missed with two shots, one from each hand before using his head as a third fist to collide with the face of Mayweather. He gave it his best flurry and Mayweather was still standing.
He headbutted him out of anger. In the fourth round, Ortiz tried to embrace Mayweather and Mayweather returned fire with a two-punch combination that left Ortiz on his back and unable to get up for the 10 count, awarding Mayweather the knockout. Mayweather took advantage of a headbutt and knocked Ortiz out for having his guard down. It's one thing to apologize with a kiss, something Ortiz did immediately after the headbutt. It's another thing to continue to do this when it's time to fight and not expect to get hit.
Mayweather has a history of knocking fighters down, around and out when they are talking or not trying to guard themselves. He did it first by doing what looked like an intentional headbutt toward Floyd. Then he fell short of our expectations by forgetting to defend himself.
It was a series of mistakes by Ortiz that led to his loss, and it was unfortunate because we knew he was capable of major mental lapses, but we hoped for the best from him anyway.
We thought he might have turned things around after the Berto fight. We thought that his lovably ineffective trash talking might be part of his guise, that somehow justice would prevail and the nice guy wouldn't finish last—despite all indications that he indeed would. My friend and colleague Tyler Curtis posted a video as well as an excellent analysis of why Floyd's conduct wasn't unfair. Rather, it was smart. Cortez had signaled by gesturing his palms toward each other that the fight had been restarted.
Mayweather went along with Ortiz's desire to hug him a third time in order for Ortiz to not look like someone who dealt a cheap pot shot in the heat of battle. After that, any fighter should have been on guard. Ortiz, who is now becoming known for his mental lapses as much as he is for his rare athletic gifts, failed to do that. Referees invariably say two things before a fight: Obey my commands at all times, and protect yourself at all times. Someone not being able to protect themselves is a reason for stoppage.
That's why the TKO is possible: if you can't protect yourself, the ref should stop the fight. Even when action isn't going on, a fighter should protect themselves. Ortiz, who had just gotten a penalty by doing something intentionally infuriating and illegal , should have known better.
His inexperience showed. No, Larry Merchant was mad at Floyd Mayweather , continuing a long run of contentiousness between the two. Both are stubborn and pig-headed. Merchant is notoriously brash and blunt, and Floyd is known to try to reinforce his "bad guy" persona. It's the kind of stuff we all love to hate, but it's what keeps us watching. If the fight hadn't ended that way, then Floyd's response would have been simply considered good TV. However, fans' pain was palpable, and so Floyd just dug another dagger in further.
He does that. At the end of round 2, Ortiz told his corner about the elbow strikes and pointed out that they were hurting him. They asked him to tell that to the referee even when he had already done that. Ortiz did not pay much attention to this advice and proceeded with rounds 3 and 4.
In round 4, Ortiz doubled down on his explosive striking. As he managed to push Mayweather into the corner, his Philly Shell guard proved ineffective and he resorted to another elbow strike to his eye. He felt as if it had caused a retina injury. Mayweather shouted out to security, sisters, children, his fiancee, drivers, PR and personal archivist — and brought them all up on stage.
There were at least 50 people there, but two were missing. He the ghost. The other absentee was his father. Floyd Sr did not get an invite; the feud between them has resumed and it is deep and genuine. There is never much peach in Mayweather's life. He thrives on turmoil. That is why he was perfectly suited to throwing that ruthless right hand and crying in celebration afterwards. The loser?
He could not stop smiling, a nervous overreaction perhaps to an embarrassing defeat. Stuff happens. I still want a rematch. It will not happen. The fight everyone wants, Mayweather against Manny Pacquiao, is still tantalisingly within reach.
But you never know what Mayweather is going to do next, as Ortiz discovered to his cost.
